El poeta galés, que era un buen aficionado a la ornitología, viajó en 1977 hasta Doñana con un amigo. Por cierto que durante el viaje, fueron detenidos por la policía francesa al ser confundidos con unos espías.

Pienso que el lago que esperaba Thomas es la Marisma, claro, e imagino cierta decepción, que se le pasaría rápidamente al ver los flamencos. Después habría experimentado los incómodos mosquitos. Pero sus últimos versos me confirman que pudo conocer a los hombres de allí, a quienes, según mi libre traducción, "un mar de tiempo" (es decir, esa forma de vivir la vida en el que el tiempo casi se puede masticar) les abandonó en ese lugar para cabalgar y soñar.
